We are all familiar with Amazon Prime – the $99/yr service that Amazon is constantly trying to shove down your throat. Amazon even ruffled feathers recently with another move to push customers toward Prime. Non-Prime customers must now spend $49 per order to get free shipping (up from $35)! We love our Prime benefits, but as with most fees, I’m not a fan of the $99 membership fee. I went in search of a way to reduce this cost, and I found a simple loophole. You can split the membership cost with a family member or trusted friend, while retaining 100% of the prime benefits!

Create an Amazon Household
Forming an Amazon Household allows two adult accounts to share full Prime benefits, along with four “child accounts,” which share only media content. For the purpose of this article, I will only be focusing on the adult accounts.
To form an Amazon Household, visit this page. Here you can add a family member or friend to your household. You do not need to share a physical address! Your chosen person must already have an Amazon account, or they will need to create one for this to work. Make sure that this is a person who you trust, because they may have access to your payment sources. The terms of Amazon Households state: “Both adults must agree to share wallets (i.e. credit/debit cards) in order to share the Prime benefits listed below.” In my experience, however, this is not the case. My wife and I share a Prime account with my parents (Hi Mom & Dad!). Mom and I are listed as the two adults for the Amazon Household, but our accounts, payment options, order histories, etc. remain fully separate.
Shared benefits among members of an Amazon Household include:
- Fast & FREE Prime Shipping benefits
- Access to Prime Video (streaming only)
- Early access to Amazon Lightning Deals
- Prime Photos (each household adult is eligible for their own personal Prime Photos account – actual photos and albums aren’t shared between accounts)
- Kindle Owners’ Lending Library
- 20% off diapers subscriptions and 15% off Baby Registry discounts, compliments of Amazon Family
Final Thoughts
There you have it. This is a simple way to effectively cut your Amazon Prime membership cost in half! If you have been holding out on joining Prime due to cost, grab a BFF/parent/sibling/cousin, and share the burden. Half the cost, all of the benefits! I am still amazed by the free 2-day shipping… I just don’t know how they do it!
