We love finding “savings synergies” here at Loophole Travel! This post will cover how to effectively get a 10% AirBNB discount, using your Discover IT card and Amazon. AirBNB helps us save a lot of money, especially in areas with few hotel chains or expensive award options. We’ve stayed at AirBNB’s in Austin, TX; Cork, Ireland; and Inverness, Scotland, to name a few, and we already have reservations in Keystone, CO and Havana, Cuba for 2017! With this simple combo, you can save 10% or more on up to $3,000 in AirBNB stays! Follow along…
Step 1: Create an AirBNB Account
If you already have an account, you can obviously skip this step. If you are new to AirBNB, you can sign up through our referral link. Using this link to sign up will save an instant $35 off your first booking! Hooray! Ok, go ahead and sign up. We will wait… …. … … … … … got it? Great!
Step 2: Get the Discover IT Card
We have covered this card pretty extensively, so I will keep this section relatively brief. The Discover IT card offers a double cash back promotion during your first full year as a card holder! It also offers 5% cash back in rotating categories each quarter. This translates to 2% cash back on all purchases and 10% cash back in the rotating categories! You can apply for the Discover IT Card here.
Some of you may already be ahead of me, but the bonus category during the third AND fourth quarter of 2016 is AMAZON.com… Which brings me to the next step…
Step 3: Buy AirBNB Gift Cards on Amazon
That’s right, Amazon sells AirBNB gift cards. You can purchase these gift cards for email delivery or physical delivery. You can redeem these cards by adding them to your AirBNB account. Once they have been added to your account, the balance never expires. When you book a reservation, the gift card balance will automatically be used as the funding source. The only restrictions are that you must have a US-based account, and you cannot use gift cards for stays over 28 days (strange, but true).
Discover allows you to earn 10% cash back on up to $1,500 in spending in bonus categories per quarter. This means you can buy $1,500 in AirBNB gift cards during the third quarter** AND the fourth quarter of 2016! These funds do not expire, so you can use them in the coming months and years to save $300 on future stays.
**Third quarter 2016 ends 9/30/16 (TOMORROW), so act fast if you want to maximize this offer! You will still be able to purchase $1,500 in the fourth quarter.
Closing Thoughts
This is a great way to save extra cash on an already-inexpensive way to travel! Since the funds don’t expire, this is pretty much a no-brainer. Where will you go with your AirBNB gift cards??
If AirBNB isn’t really your thing, you can still reload your Amazon Gift Card balance with your Discover IT card. This is another way to lock in 10% savings on your next $1,500 (per quarter) in purchases at Amazon!
