Who is Boundary?
First, let’s talk briefly about the brand. Boundary builds technically innovative and sustainable products designed at their base of Utah’s Wasatch Mountains. They create products to withstand the wears of time and exceed the most rigorous performance and environmental standards. Kickstarter?? C’mon man…
Yeah yeah. I know Kickstarter projects get a bad rap. They can be risky; it takes a while to get the product; and there are no long-term reviews to go by. These are all fair concerns.
I’m very picky about the Kickstarter projects that I’ll write about. To feature one of these products, they must have a track record and provide me a tangible sample. Boundary has already brought two products to market via Kickstarter. This is their first foray into clothing, and it’s already been a huge hit, with over $400,000 raised (goal was $35,000). I have a sample pair in hand, and they’re great! More on that below. This is a brand to trust on Kickstarter!
How are the Boundary Chase Pants?
Boundary reached out to me and offered a sample for my thoughts. I requested a pair of the Chase pants in a slim. Since it’s mid-summer in Kansas City (98+ degrees F), I haven’t had much opportunity to wear these pants out. However, I’ve been wearing them around the house, and they’re VERY comfortable!
NOTE: The Chase Pants come in Men’s Slim and Straight fits and Women’s Slim and Straight fits. I’m specifically writing about the Men’s slim fit, but pick which ever you prefer.
Fit/Comfort
My typical size is a 34/32 slim fit. For these pants, I requested a 34/34, so I would have enough material to utilize the reflective cuffs. They absolutely fit true to size and are not-at-all restrictive. The fit is similar to the Slim Rivets from Western Rise, and a bit looser than Slim Dungarees from Outlier (particularly in the calf area).
The four way stretch is more substantial than I expected, due to the lycra content. This was a very welcome surprise, because slim fit pants MUST be flexible, otherwise they become constrictive. Other than my pair of Climbers from Outlier, these are the stretchiest 5-pocket pants I own. Additionally, the waistband is not “squeezy,” like the one on Slim Dungarees. It has a gentle stretch, for when I eat a bit too much at dinner during a trip!
Material
I’ll allow Boundary to explain the new “TT-1 Fabric” they use for these pants:
For over 4 years we have been working behind the scenes with boutique mills and groundbreaking yarn suppliers to create a propriety and innovative fabric we call TT-1. The premium combination of Combat Wool, T-400 Lycra, and Nylon 6,6 to create a dynamic blend of technical fibers
Let me break that down briefly. The Combat Wool is the most durable wool on the market today, and enhances abrasion resistance, stretch and breathability. It’s substantially stronger than standard wool, and can withstand everyday wear and tear. Nylon 6,6 in the mix further increases the durability, moisture wicking, and stain resistance by bringing in one of the most well-tested formulations of nylon fabric. Finally, T-400 Lycra adds the essential element of 4-way stretch, without the worry of bagginess over time.
The fabric weight is a bit higher than other “travel” pants I own, making these better suited for mid/cooler weather trips. I’d estimate that these weigh in similarly to Strong Dungarees from Outlier and Slim Rivets from Western Rise.
Travel-Friendly Features
The Kickstarter Page lists over 20 features for these pants. While they are all pretty great, I’ll give you my top picks for travel.
Pocketing
The Chase Pants feature a standard 5-pocket design, but with additional features and a couple hidden pockets. First off, the front pockets are DEEP. I always appreciate when pockets can hold my huge Note 8 phone, with the case.
Two hidden zipper pockets, one on the left thigh and one inside the back, right pocket, offer additional security for cash, cards, or travel docs.
Finally, and this one may be a bit gimmicky, but I appreciate the innovation… The back left pocket includes magnets that create a “nest” to hold your cell phone upright. I don’t typically carry my phone in my back pocket, but the magnets work as advertised. Maybe I’ll convert!
Packability
Essential to snagging a spot in my backpack, The Chase Pants roll up very small. They’re slightly larger than a t-shirt when rolled up and significantly smaller than a standard pair of jeans. You won’t be sacrificing bag space for these.
Quick Dry
If you’re caught in a rainstorm or need to do some laundry, these pants will dry out very quickly. The blend of wool & nylon create a fabric that will dry to the touch within 30 minutes (in a well-ventilated area), and Boundary states this is 10x faster than merino wool alone.
Odor/Stain Resistance
Merino wool in the blend offer natural odor resistance, and the Chase Pants are treated with a barricade DWR coating to repel stains and moisture. That means your pants will look and smell fresh for the duration of your trip, even if you’re clumsy like me.
Reflective Details
Every little bit of visibility helps, especially when walking around a new city after dark. A reflective strip was sewn along the inside of the pants leg, and it offers extra visibility when you cuff the pants.
Final Thoughts
I’m very impressed with the sample pair of Chase Pants from Boundary. I look forward to being able to thoroughly test these on the road, and I believe they will be a valuable addition to my travel wardrobe. Material innovations continue to blow me away, and these offer a great blend of durability, comfort, and odor/stain resistance. You will find the intelligent travel features useful during your trips. Head over to Kickstarter now and grab your pair for $89 (retail $120), before the campaign ends!
