Foehn Clothing is a Quebec, Canada-based, outdoor clothing company. They focus on durable, performance clothes for rock climbers, with a modern aesthetic. Currently, they are a growing company, with a limited lineup of high-quality products. In this post, I’m going to review their flagship offerings, the Brise Pants and Brise Shorts.
A member of the Foehn marketing team reached out to me and offered a sample of the Brise Pants and Shorts for me to test and review. Below is my honest opinion of these items.
Brise Pants & Shorts
You may be wondering why I’m writing about rock climbing gear on a travel website. No, this isn’t an extremely niche post, only intended for people who take vacations to climb rock walls. I’m writing about these pants, because they have many of the features that I look for in travel pants. In addition, they’re crazy comfortable!
Features
The Brise Pants and Shorts have all the same features. The only difference, obviously, is that the pants are a longer version, with ankle cuffs.
Stretch Fabric
As with all travel clothing I evaluate, comfort is my #1 concern. If I’m only bringing a few pieces of clothing for a lengthy trip, they MUST be comfortable!
Foehn builds the Brise Pants and Shorts from a blend of 96% nylon and 4% spandex, giving them a subtle 4-way stretch. This allows the tailored/slim fit of the pants to feel surprisingly free. Additionally, they built in a crotch gusset, articulated knees on the pants, and a stretch waistband and ankle cuffs for extra freedom of movement. These items are so comfortable, I actually wear them around the house as lounge wear!
DWR Finish
A durable water resistant finish is applied to every pair to ensure they stay clean and fresh. This is obviously critical for travel, if you’re only packing one or two pairs of bottoms. You want to be sure that they stay clean, even if you’re prone to spills, like me.
Mechanically Wicking
As I mentioned above, these items are designed for one of the most strenuous, sweat-inducing activities: rock climbing. This means they have to be able to wick moisture away from the body, otherwise you would get swampy very quickly!
I tested this feature by wearing them to play pickleball. I tend to sweat heavily when I play sports, and the pants kept me very comfortable. The stretch also allowed me to lunge for shots, without fear of ripping. I even went to my knee to hit a shot, and the pants didn’t show any sign of damage.
Engineered Thigh Storage
This was a bit of a wildcard for me. I believe that the thigh storage pocket is mostly intended for climbers, but it has some application for travel. If you want to carry a wallet securely, there’s no place more secure than a zippered thigh pocket. It would take a VERY bold pickpocket to reach for it!
The material that secures the top of the pocket stands out on lighter colorways, so I selected the navy and black options. I also removed the tassel on the zipper, because I like a uniform appearance.
Zippered Ankle Gusset
You’ll notice that the ankles on the Brise Pants are form-fitting, similar to a pair of joggers. I’ve never been a big fan of this look, so I was skeptical. Fortunately, Foehn built zippers into the ankle area, to allow the cuffs to expand. I’ve worn the pants both ways, and I find that I prefer the zippers to be closed during activity and open for relaxing.
Final Thoughts
I was not sure what to expect from the Brise Pants and Brise Shorts. I’ve been surprised by how much I enjoy them and by the amount of complements when I wear them out. I don’t usually wear pants during athletic activity, but these will definitely be my go-to option. For the traveler, they offer exceptional comfort, stain resistance, moisture regulation, and secure storage. These are a great option for your travel wardrobe.
